fatsmoker – about life and anything else

Time is flying right now. It is passing by.

I am afraid I am slowly gaining weight – yet I am not really sure since I dare not visit my scale… To make it worse, I maybe smoke by times too.

Overall I am unsure. Then again maybe it is the huge amount of rest I have from sports. Too much free time, too much energy. Too much work.

Private and business life works pretty well right now. Triathlon does not. Were it not for the smoking I would call it the perfect rest.

What do I do sportwise?

  • It seems I cancel the Ironman distance for next year. Just because it is too early for my body. Especially the doctor’s advice of health issues in 2012 made me decide that way. A long talk with Coach Ralf confirmed that it is a wise decision.
  • Instead I go for several olympic distance races and other races. Plan is four olympic distances, bike part in relay at Challenge Roth and a Marathon in autumn 2012.
  • For now I do base endurance on bike and swimming technique. Yet I slacked with training amount. That totals for about 10-15 hours training a week.
  • Also I restarted on my diet. Actually I am sure gaining weight stopped today and just turns 180ยฐ to weight loss.
  • Smoking IS an issue I gotta change today. Then again I told myself the same yesterday and the day before yesterday and…

Bottom line: I slacked a lot and I am threatened to fall back into old behaviour patterns. Tomorrow is a base endurance unit of 2-4 hours (depends on myself when on the track – if I do 4 hours) and swimming.

I am unable to predict my next few weeks. I hope I do get back fully on track. Then again that relaxed attitude might be needed right now.

Yours

Martin

  1. First, I’m glad you’re still alive! I was starting to wonder… Second, good for you for taking a realistic look at what’s going and and making realistic decisions on how to go forward. By doing both, you will be successful in the long run. And even if you backslid a bit, just remember to keep moving forward. Two steps forward, one step back is still ONE STEP FORWARD! Just keep us posted so we can keep encouraging you toward success, ‘kay?

  2. I wanna send you a rhetoric spanking for being quiet for so blasted LONG! YOU know how bad I have struggled for months–we would have stood by you with all your new challenges. From one ex-smoker. Dich them thangs buddy — they will stunt your growth! ๐Ÿ˜‰

So Glad you are back. Next time you struggle–do it with us! You won’t fall back into old patterns cuz we will keep reminding you of your goals. ๐Ÿ˜€ Reminding you how truly strong you are, and tellin’ ya ta keep on moving even if it is baby steps forward.

I know how hard it is to have your goals jerked away from you by health issues. You will over come them as well and you will be even more happy with yourself than you could have ever imagined. ๐Ÿ˜€

Again — glad you are back!

Blessings My Friend Across the Water,
    Shonnie

  3. Ok. Sorry about last night. I was cooking when we tweeted & I got busy with some pork!
First of all. We all go through the woes of off season. I too am going through them now & gave myself a through beating when I did not do the half marathon that a lot of other people did this Sunday, but I went to cheer them on.
Part of racing is that we should not compare ourselves to everyone else, but human nature just doesn’t know it & we compare ourselves to everyone else even when we think we are not.
I have not had to give up smoking, but I did have to give up my aunt (at 49) & my grandfather to lung cancer. What a horrible way to go. I do not recommend it Martin.
What I do have to let go of is the FEAR, fear that holds me back from giving my best, fear that keeps me from taking a rest when my body is demanding it, fear that keeps my time so occupied I don’t have time to sit down & think why am I doing this? What is my motivation.
This sport is not for the weak so #1. You are not weak. This sport is for the determined so #2. You can do this for you.
Glad work & personal life are going well. Don’t stop now you are so close. Run this race marked before you. You will be so proud of yourself & you will be amazed that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Remember you don’t have to do a full Ironman to show you are a triathlete. You can do a 70.3, Olympics or stick with sprints. The fact that you get up off the couch, and do something says so much more than being able to put a tattoo on your body that has the IM logo.
You are you Martin & you are great. Don’t let yourself forget that. And remind me how great I am when I struggle too ;0)

  4. I’m glad to see you back, I had wondered where you got to. Do what you need to do to rest but please at least put the smokes down. We both know that you won’t progress at all if you keep at it. I too am really struggling with the smoking. I’m here if you want to talk.

    • I had it quit for 1 year – so guess its the time right now to question myself and go on with how I started…

      • Just because you slipped doesn’t mean you should throw out all that acheivement and progress. It’s a hard thing to stay at, very tough so just move forward everyday and do your best. That’s what I’m doing. Keep me posted ok?

  5. Well, it sounds like we are on the same track. We need to get these things conquered. First, I was a smoker back in the day and it is not easy to quit. Don’t be so hard on your self. Take it day to day and moment to moment. You will conquer it but the urges are hard to control. Second, I think you made the right decision about your IM. I am sure it was not easy but it will be for the best. And when we are both ready we will do it!

I hope you know that I am on your side. I know an ocean separates us but I will always fight the fight with you. In fact, I am going to put my Challenge Roth band on when I get home and wear it every day just so you can feel me channeling my strength to you! DON’T GIVE UP!!

  6. Welcome back Martin. Fits and starts and restarts are a part of any progression. You recognize and adjust and keep on. And good for you for writing about this….so your friends can help you with understanding and encouragement.

Like Christi, I too will put my Challenge Roth band back on. Just did – it’s been sitting in my desk drawer.

  7. I’m glad you’re back, Martin! I can only imagine how hard it is to give up your IM goal, but that doesn’t make you any less awesome! What you are doing is still to me, a tremendous achievement. Even though we’re coming from different places ( you workout 10-15 hours a week on your rest weeks, I’m struggling to get myself to workout 3 times a week…), I can relate to what you are going through, and I know it’s not always easy get back on track when you’re falling to old comfortable patterns. But you have to do it. For me. PLEASE. Like it or not, you’re my role model. So I urge you to throw the cigarettes away! You don’t need them, believe me, you really don’t.
And next time you feel like taking a drag, feel free to give me a call.

    LG, Cardio Girl
